食べるってこと

私たちは毎日何か食べてる。でも、自分の口にしてる物が、どうやって育てられ、加工され、どれだけ離れたところから運ばれてきたか、その過程でどれだけのエネルギー(労働力・水・電気・燃料など)が費やされてるか、私たちはよっぽど意識しないかぎり何も考えないで、目の前のお皿から食べ物を口にしている。でも、グローバル化された食品流通の裏にたくさんの問題が隠されてることに気がつくと、自分の住む土地で健康的に育てられたその季節に採れる食材を自分で料理して食べるほうが、自分にも環境にもいいことが分かってくる。どんな化学薬品で加工されたか分からない食材、自分の住む街から遠く離れた場所の水・土壌などの環境汚染、食品の長距離流通で消費される無駄なエネルギー、食品会社が少しでも多くの利益を生み出すために起きる貧しい国での搾取などの問題は、きれいにスーパーに並べられた食品からは想像するのが難しい。けれども、さまざまな関係をたどっていくと、どうして食べ物の過剰な先進国と飢餓で苦しむ発展途上国の格差が縮まないのか、どうして発展途上国で武力争いが止まないのかということにまで、グローバル化が影響していることが見えてくる。友達は、食べ物が人をつくるって言ってたけど、ホントだと思う。もちろん、自分は健康にベストなものしか食べないっていうほど完璧ではないけど、できるだけベターなものを選びたいなと思う。ときどき面倒で、簡単なもので済ましてしまうこともあるけれど。。以下のリンクはEnvironmental Studiesとかやってる人には役に立ちそう。
